Waking Up with YouTube

, , ,

This is going to be pretty random and I mean more so than usual.

Right now I am busy working away at the 11 questions from both simpleek and soaringwings.  I am, of course, drawing the hugest blank ever but that is really not a surprise.  The answers will come to me in due time…hopefully that time being within the next two weeks.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

When I wake up in the morning, I have a routine.  Part of my routine, if I have the time, consists of at least half an hour of zoning out at my computer.  I use that time to help me wake up and to read the news.  Yeah, it’s like newspaper time only without the ink smudges on my fingers.  When I read the news, I also usually play some videos on YouTube as background noise.

This morning by random chance I happened to come across two videos that woke me up pretty damn fast!

First one: Assassin’s Creed 3 Trailer

You know, I have no doubt in my mind that Assassin’s Creed 3 will be an amazing game.  Really, I don’t.  But dammit all, if something is going to cause my faith to waiver, it is most definitely going to be the setting of Colonial America!  I figured that the game would eventually have to come to America at some point, but I was kind of hoping for modern America rather than historical America.  US history is the most BORING history in the world to me.  ANYTHING would have been better than this!

Last one: Tenacious D

A friend of mine actually gave me some Tenacious D songs years ago and I really liked them, but I’m not really the type who cares about who exactly the artist is.  It sounds bad, but hey, the truth hurts.  Anyway, this morning, I came across this video and I’m watching it and I’m wondering: “Why in the hell is Jack Black in this?”  Faint alarms start ringing in my brain and I’m thinking: “Haha, no way,” as I look up Tenacious D on Wikipedia.  Jack Black is part of Tenacious D.  Fuck.  No wonder his damn voice sounded familiar.  All these years and I couldn’t make a connection!  I am usually really bad at making these connections, but I haven’t needed years to make them until now!!!  Gah!  Oh god, and I love Jack Black…how could I not hear this?  Who feels like the stupidest person in the world?  I do!

So…that was my morning!  How was yours?

Daylight Savings Time

, , , , , , , , , ,

Wow…it’s been a really long time since I have posted anything…oops.

Oh well, that’s what happens when life gets in the way…and, you know, when you sell your soul to the Mass Effect series.  Definitely a soul well spent!

But anyway, because I wanted to post SOMETHING up, I decided to do a little thing about Daylight Savings Time.  It just happened this morning here so, yeah, it’s pretty random, but whatever.  I’ll make it fast.

Daylight Savings is something that I didn’t really experience until I came to Europe.  Where I’m from, we don’t do Daylight Savings.  Seriously, the only reason I knew it existed was because suddenly one day, I would come home from school, sit in front of the TV, and realize ‘Shit, my cartoons aren’t playing in this time slot.’  And of course, the show I wanted to watch was ALWAYS right in that special little time slot where I’d get home from school and get to watch the last two minutes.

Maybe that’s why I hate Daylight Savings so much…

Anyway, here’s a small blast from the past!  These are some of the anime that I remember not being able to watch fully because of Daylight Savings Time.  The list isn’t that long because honestly, that was a long time ago and my memory is not shiny and new.

This is Ronin Warriors aka Yoroiden Samurai Troopers.  I LOVED this show and then DST came and smacked me in the face!  I remember this really well because when DST rolled around, it was on the day they were showing the episode for a HUGE battle and with a character I had been DYING to finally see in action!  I came home to see the fucking credits rolling.  I think that was the first time that I officially declared DST to be the enemy.

I am not a huge fan of the DB series, but this was my first foray into it.  I didn’t necessarily care that I missed watched anything specific, it was more that I was irritated that I was being interrupted while watching something with an epic length.  I like everything coming at me in a smooth, concise order without skipping a beat so that I don’t miss anything.

And finally, Hamtaro.  I fucking love Hamtaro.  This is one of those animes that should be a guilty pleasure that you hide in the closet, but I don’t care.  I love telling people that I loved watching this damn show!  I mean, LOOK at them!  Who would not want a Ham-Ham?!  Well, apparently DST, so yes, DST, after all these years, you can still drop dead!

Well, after this little “rant”, I do feel a tiny bit better about DST.

Well, until I get off my lazy butt and start resetting the clocks and watches anyway.

The Borrower Arrietty

, , , , , ,

The Borrower Arrietty (借りぐらしのアリエッティ- Karigurashi no Arietti) is yet another movie from the wonderful people at Studio Ghibli.  It centers around the tale of a Borrower named Arrietty who lives with her mother and father beneath the floorboards of your average house.  One day a boy with a heart condition, Sho, moves into the house.  Upon his arrival, he managed to catch his first glimpse of Arrietty, but it was not to be his last.  Despite the two very different worlds Sho and Arrietty come from, they manage to put a stop to the machinations of the maid Haru and they also forge a strong friendship that neither will forget.

This movie was everything I did not expect it to be.

I just might have nightmares tonight...

To give some background, I was not looking forward to this movie at all when I first heard about it.  My initial reaction to learning that it was going to be based off of The Borrowers by Mary Norton was to groan and pretend that I hadn’t just read that.  The only contact I have had with The Borrowers comes from the movie they made of the same name in 1997.  The borrowers in that movie…I don’t know what it was about them, but I just couldn’t find it within myself to like them.  After mulling it over for a while, I’m pretty sure I didn’t like them because of their hair.  It kind of…freaks me out, to say the least.  Strike one for Ghibli’s Arrietty.

This is Ponyo doing a very good impression of how I felt after her movie.

The other thing that had me wary of this new movie actually came from Ghibli itself: Ponyo.  When I first saw some preview pictures of the movie, I was ecstatic!  It was cute and adorable and it was from Ghibli!  What could be wrong with that, right?  Well, there was nothing wrong with it, I just found it disappointing.  I am a huge fan of Ghibli movies and I definitely don’t like everything that they have produced, but Ponyo just left me feeling rather empty.  The opening underwater sequence blew me away and then the rest of the movie came and it fizzled and spluttered.  I really don’t like to spread my opinion about Ponyo because I can’t really explain the reasons behind it.  The animation was phenomenal as usual and the story was pretty good too, but to me it was just missing that something that makes it special.  And that was Strike two for Arrietty.

No idea why, but I liked this scene the best in terms of looks.

The third strike was supposed to be the movie itself, but that never came to pass and it still blows my mind!  The story was simple, but well executed, the characters were all likeable, and the graphics were stunning!  The Borrower Arrietty was, simply put, the embodiment of everything that makes Ghibli pros at what they do!  It was amazing and I loved every single moment of it!  A couple of hours after I finished this movie, I realized that this is the first time I have ever wanted a Ghibli movie to keep going!  I never even thought that about my beloved Totoro!

All in all, I can safely say that The Borrower Arrietty just rocketed its way to the Number 2 spot on my list of Favorite Ghibli movies!  Totoro still remains at the top in my heart, but Arrietty definitely left her mark there too!

And here’s some Totoro because I can!

Trine 2

, ,

I finished Trine 2 a little while ago and it is one of those rare games where I haven’t played its predecessor.  Even though I haven’t personally played through the first Trine, I have watched it being played in its entirety, so I do know the story behind it.

Trine 2 begins with our heroes Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief being whisked away by the mystical Trine.  They arrive at an unfamiliar location and have no idea what is in store for them.  As they progress through their surroundings, they encounter the Crown Princess Rosabel who asks for their help in ridding her kingdom of goblins.  The heroes, of course, agree and along the way they find that not everything is as it seems.

Well, I must be getting bolder because recently I really seem to like taking on games that have my most hated elements right at the heart of their game play.  Unlike Portal and Portal 2 however, Trine 2 doesn’t just have puzzles, it also has jumping.  If it weren’t for the graphics, the chances of me not touching this game would have been 100%.

See?  I definitely think that the graphics alone make Trine 2 worth playing!

In terms of game play it is pretty simple.  Each of the three heroes has some specific things that they can do.  Amadeus the Wizard can conjure up boxes and planks that you can climb on, plus he can levitate and move things.  Zoya the Thief can swing from anything made of wood, can essentially ‘double jump,’ and shoots arrows.  Pontius the Knight is the main attacker with his sword and hammer, but he can also defend with his shield.  You control one character at a time, but can switch between them whenever you want.  My favorite was by far Zoya even though she was the one that gave me the most problems.  I may suck at jumping and swinging, but I do like to do it when it doesn’t become frustrating, like when I can’t jump on a godforsaken mushroom or a leaf…  The puzzles in this game are also essentially pretty easy.  There are definitely spots where you will have to put in a lot more thought to get past it, but everything is doable.

I think the only ‘downside’ to this game would have to be the story.  I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, I liked it, but I think that a lot of gamers would overlook Trine 2 due to the simplicity of the story.  It isn’t like an RPG that has tons of back story and surprises.  It is very straightforward and easily predictable.

Happy Leap Day

Happy Leap Day!

I wanted to write something today just because this day only comes every four years.  That, and I am kind of irritated that I didn’t realize this year was a Leap Year until a couple of days ago.

Anyway, the only things that I could think of to write about that would have any significance with Leap Year were all pretty boring so I axed them.  Instead, I am just going to write about one, or rather three, of the things that have me filled to the brim with excitement and anticipation!

This year, not 1, but 3 of my favorite game series will be releasing their next installment!  My wallet is going to feel the crunch, but I will be so happy this year!

First up is Assassin’s Creed 3!

I actually found out pretty recently that this game is going to be released sometime in October and that is pretty much all I found out.  I can’t really say that I blame the makers for wanting to keep things under wraps because at least the ending of Assassin’s Creed 2 was pretty surprising!  I haven’t played Brotherhood or Revelations yet, but I don’t think that will take out any of my excitement.

When it comes to the Assassin’s Creed series, there are two things that I absolutely love above all else!  One is the counter kills.  I am not the type of person who enjoys fighting strategically or realistically.  I just want the opponent DEAD.  Counters in AC allow me to do that with ease and they are stylish!  What’s not to love about jabbing a hidden blade into the chin of a guard?

The second thing I love about AC is the jumping.  If there is something I am worse at than puzzle games, it is without a doubt games that involve tons of jumping and movement.  In AC, jumping and climbing are integral parts of the game, but it is done in such a manner that even I, the crappiest jumper and climber in the world, can do everything easily and more importantly, have fun doing it!

Expectations: Honestly, the unexpected.  This game can do pretty much anything it wants and I am looking forward to seeing where it is going to go.

Next is Bioshock Infinite.

This is the one game out of the line-up that I am really not too keen on, sorely based on the fact that it is not underwater.  I know, it sounds like a stupid reason, but I loved Rapture and the whole underwater atmosphere.  It felt so claustrophobic and damning and eery!  It was great!

Another turn off for me is the apparent lack of Little Sisters.  The Little Sisters were probably my favorite characters in Bioshock and Bioshock 2.  They’ve just always been there and I always thought that they would be there and then to not have them in this game…I’ll be disappointed to say the least.

Expectations: I’m sure this game will be good, but I don’t think I’ll love it like I did the two previous games.  Still praying for Little Sisters and a more specific release date!

Finally, the one I have been waiting for: Mass Effect 3!

I love the Mass Effect series.  Love, love, love.  I could go on all day about how much I love this series, but yeah, I think even I would get irritated by that!

So, what do I love about Mass Effect?  I would have to say: What don’t I love about Mass Effect?  I love the characters, the dialogue, the story, the universe, everything!  Sure, there are parts that I don’t like, but they can be ignored, or killed off as in the case of Miranda…, but overall, Mass Effect hits all the right buttons with me.

Expectations: Pure Awesome.  That is all.

So much good stuff coming out this year!  I can hardly wait!

From Road Rage to Pedestrian Rage

, , ,

Everyone who has ever been in a car with me, with the exception of my Dad because he is the nice one, will tell you that I suffer from road rage.  I am not one of the idiots who like to tail people for cutting them off accidentally.  I just like to cuss profusely at people I deem ‘inconsiderate,’ like drivers driving like ‘old people’ or assholes who just will not make that left turn even though no traffic is coming!  God, just thinking about it irritates me!

Today I got to experience what I will from now on be calling Pedestrian Rage.

From here on out, there will be bitching and swearing and all around stupid childishness, so read at your own risk. Continue reading

Pokemon Black 2 & Pokemon White 2

, , ,

If someone were to ask me right now: “Why do you like the Pokemon games so much?”, I would not know how to answer them.  The newly released teaser image for the newest Pokemon games, Pokemon Black 2 & Pokemon White 2, are certainly not helping me find that answer.

For starters:

What the hell is this?  This is what I can expect from the new games?  That’s wonderful, except…

I kind of already saw them in Pokemon Black & Pokemon White.

I admit, while Pokemon Black and White brought definite improvements to game play, the new Pokemon themselves were pretty pathetic.  If the teaser image is anything to go by, seems like the new games will be following that trend too.  Armor-like things on old legendary Pokemon?  Yep, unless new, awesome info pops up about the new games, I think I am going to have to drop Pokemon altogether.  Here’s hoping for interesting info later on!

Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

, , , , , , ,

This song was the trigger that led to my rapid, two day descent into the manga called Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) by Sakae Esuno.

When I first saw the word ‘Diary,’ I immediately thought “Oh no, another Death Note.  Great.”  Thankfully I was wrong.

Mirai Nikki is a story about a young, socially awkward boy named Yukiteru Amano.  He and 11 others are thrust into a game by the God of Time and Space aka Deus Ex Machina to battle it out so that the winner can take his place as God.  Each of them are equipped with a special ‘Future Diary’ that allows them to see future events.  Unfortunately, the only way to be the last man standing is to literally be the last man standing.  Luckily for Yukiteru, he has a protector in the shape of Yuno Gasai, his stalker and a Future Diary holder, who is willing to kill anyone who is a threat to her beloved Yukiteru.

Well, from here on out there will be many spoilers and probably some fan-girling so…read at your own risk! Continue reading

A Beautiful Poem…that I found through a fanfic.

, , , , , ,

It has been so long already since I found this poem that I have no idea exactly in which fanfic I first read this.  Well, that doesn’t really matter since I love this poem regardless of how I found it.  It’s kind of funny to think that after all this time I can still remember enough of this poem to find it again through Google!  Haha, how romantic!  Anyway, enough babbling!  Here is the poem and Happy Valentine’s Day World!

A White Rose

The red rose whispers of passion,

And the white rose breathes of love;

Oh, the red rose is a falcon,

And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream-white rose bud

With a flush on its petal tips;

For the love that is purest and sweetest

Has a kiss of desire on the lips.

Something Old, Something New, Something Seen, and Something Too Good to be True

, , , , , ,

Movies, movies, movies.

I swear, in the past two days I have watched more movies than I would in half a year!  Not a bad thing really, but damn my mind hurts!

Well, right now I am only going to write about 4 of the movies that I watched and they are as follows:

Something Old: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

Something New: Barely Legal (Well, it was new for me…)

Something Seen: Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Something Too Good to be True: Monsters

Something Old: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

The last time I watched this movie was easily over a decade ago and I have to say that after all that time…this movie’s quality has not changed at all!  I don’t know what it is about this movie that makes it so amazing, but it is and it has completely withstood the test of time!  This is probably the first movie I have ever watched that I thought was great in my childhood and still great, if not better, in my adult years!  I mean really, as soon as this movie finished I started vocalizing just how amazed I was that it was still that fucking fantastic!  Shadow, Chance, and Sassy apparently will never grow old for me!  Plus, it is refreshing that it is an animal movie and their mouths DON’T MOVE!  Amazing how much more likeable talking animals are with just that little detail added to the mix!

Something New: Barely Legal

Well…this movie probably never won any awards.  It was funny, without a doubt, but sometimes I just wanted to sob at the awkwardness of being a teenager…not to mention that I wanted to cringe at their homemade porn scenes which are shockingly…very much like real porn.  That is really…really sad somehow.  Hard to believe people pay to watch that shit rather than actually attempting human interaction.

Something Seen: Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

The first time I watched this was not all that long ago, but surprisingly, I couldn’t really remember much from it.  Second time around was pretty much neutral.  Funny moments, forgettable movie.  The animal’s mouths move here.  Definitely kills some of the likeability.

Something Too Good to be True: Monsters

Oh, I was waiting for this one.  Now I can finally bitch!

“After six years, they are no longer aliens.  They’re residents.”

That comes from straight off the top of the cover of our blu-ray edition of Monsters.  It is in English so I could read it and that was already a plus!  It also sounds interesting and it has aliens!  More pluses!  And to top it all off, it was part of a 2 for 10 Euro sale, so of course it was a winner!

Fucking fuckity fuck fuck, this movie SUCKED!  I can’t remember the last time a movie has actually made me sleepy and there I was, within the first half an hour ready to pass out on the couch!  I still can’t believe how different this movie was compared to its awesome cover and description!

The biggest gripe for me with this movie was by far this: THE COMPLETE AND UTTER LACK OF FUCKING ALIENS!  Seriously, what the hell was up with this goddamn movie?  Don’t go preaching about aliens when you decide to put the aliens in the movie for a big old chunk of 10 MINUTES!  Hell, I would be surprised if it even reached that amount of time.  Most of the aliens’ screen time came from the news shot that the movie LOVED to show on every TV the American pair passed.  The same exact fucking shot.  The alien looked like an octopus.  Wonderful.  I wanted to watch this movie because it said ALIENS.  Where the FUCK are my aliens?!

Well, now that that is out of the way, I can move on to the minor gripe I had with this movie and that would be: lack of story.  I can appreciate a subtle love story, really I can but I just did not feel it with these two.  When they kissed, I was pretty sure it was because of the dancing, glow-in-the-dark octopi releasing love pheromones into the air and they didn’t have their gas masks on.  Yeah…how ’bout no?  Oddly enough, before starting this post, I went looking around for what people thought about this movie and rather a lot of people seemed to LIKE this movie!  Some even went so far as to say it was a BRILLIANT movie!  What the hell were these people watching?  My god, no way in hell was this movie THAT amazing!

But, that leads me to the small amount of praise I will give for this movie.  While reading up on people’s reaction to Monsters, I found that apparently this movie was made on a really tiny budget.  If that is the case, I give them credit because while this movie is completely lacking in substance, it is visually a rather nice movie.  The locations are great and the aliens(when I could fucking SEE an alien) were well done.  If you were expecting more praise, tough.  That’s all you get from me.

Well, at the end of the day, I learned this lesson: Just because it says it has aliens, doesn’t mean it will have aliens.

So sneaky the film makers couldn't find them!
